IT'S YOUR TIME TO SAVE LIVES!

Together we can defeat HIV & Aids, TB, malaria and neglected tropical diseases - act now!

#savelives

Who’s talking about #LetsSaveLives?

When they speak, decision-makers listen. They are global health Champions and they are leading the way as we call on EU and national governments to increase EU investment and commitment for global health research and development. Contact them and encourage them to speak up. By acting together we will be able to eliminate HIV & AIDS, malaria, TB, and neglected tropical diseases for good!

How we can save lives

OVER 1 BILLION PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD SUFFER FROM THE DEVASTATING EFFECTS OF LIVING WITH DISEASES OF POVERTY

INTERNATIONAL TARGETS AND GOALS ARE SET FOR REDUCING HIV & AIDS, TB, MALARIA AND NEGLECTED TROPICAL DISEASES (FOR EXAMPLE, THE MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS AND POST-2015 DEVELOPMENT AGENDA)

MEPS CALL ON EU TO INCREASE FUNDING FOR RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT INTO HIV & AIDS, TB, MALARIA AND NEGLECTED TROPICAL DISEASES

THE EU REACHES AN AGREEMENT ON SPENDING FOR R&D INTO NEW INTERVENTIONS AND MEDICINES

MEPS APPROVE AGGREEMENT ON EU SPENDING IN THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT

THE EU’S PROGRAMMES IDENTIFY PRIORITIES FOR DISEASES FOR ACTION

PROJECTS FOR POTENTIALLY TRANSFORMATIVE MEDICAL INTERVENTIONS ARE SUBMITTED

CLINICAL TRIALS TAKE PLACE UNDERTAKEN BY RESEARCHERS FROM LOW- AND MIDDLE-INCOME COUNTRIES

PRODUCTS DEVELOPED FOR MARKET AND CLEARED FOR USE

INTERNATIONAL ORGANISATIONS, CIVIL SOCIETY, GOVERNMENTS AND THE MEDICAL COMMUNITY WORK TOGETHER TO IMPROVE HEALTH SYSTEMS AND MAKE SURE PEOPLE CAN ACCESS THE MEDICINES THEY NEED

ROLL-OUT OF NEW MEDICINES

MEN AND WOMEN HAVE ACCESS TO NEW MEDICINES AND TREATMENTS – CAN PROTECT THEMSELVES BETTER AGAINST HIV & AIDS, TB, MALARIA, AND NEGLECTED DISEASES.

THIS LEADS TO A CASCADING EFFECT: MORE LIVES SAVED, BETTER QUALITY OF LIFE, ECONOMIC PROSPERITY, AND REDUCTION OF POVERTY.

Busting the Myths

  • MYTH

EU investment in research and development for poverty-related and neglected diseases (PRNDs) only benefits poor countries.

    FACT

EU public funding for PRND R&D generates a net benefit to the EU economy. Each euro of EU PRND R&D investment generates an additional 1.05 euro of investment for the EU from companies, philanthropic organisations, and other governments, many of these based outside the EU.

  • MYTH

Funding for Global health Research and Development (GH R&D) would be better spent in other areas, such as in industries and programmes to reduce unemployment in Europe.

    FACT

Increased spending on GH R&D leads to an expansion of economic growth and creates jobs in the EU. Between 2002 and 2010, over 13,000 high-skill jobs were created and sustained, due to public investment in this field, many of which being exactly the kind of smart, high-value jobs sought by the EU growth strategy.

  • MYTH

GH R&D delivers little to no results. We have been searching for an end to AIDS for over 30 years with no success

    FACT

Investment in R&D for PRNDs has led to significant increases in the knowledge of the medical community on a range of diseases. This has also resulted in innovations in maternal and infant care, saving the lives of millions of people worldwide.

Why we do this

With this campaign the DSW wants to ensure:

1) Renewed national and European political commitment for global health research and development in the fight against HIV & AIDS, malaria, TB and neglected tropical diseases.

2) Increased funding by the European Union and European countries for global health research and development targeted at HIV, malaria, TB and neglected tropical diseases through increased cash contributions to EDCTP2 and dedicated calls under the Horizon 2020.

We did it!

Thanks to your incredible support we have made significant progress in ensuring global health R&D receives the commitment and investment it needs. We have achieved:

  • Campaign endorsement by over 40 Members of the European Parliament.
  • Support received from the European Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation, Carlos Moedas.
  • Overwhelming support from heads of international organisations such as Unicef, the UNFPA, and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. The campaign was also supported by 17 civil society organisations from around the world.

None of this would have possible without your support too!

We will keep the campaign site open for now but will no longer be accepting signatories. Want to stay in touch? Reach out to Eoghan Walsh and let’s continue to drive this momentum forward!
